We need to do more! Climate change approaches

If a post-human, studies Anthropocene Era (Present Days), our identities will be Tupperware, PET bottles, zip-locks, water bottles and straws. We need to do more… yes! Climate change is no joke neither plastic pollution. If you are really concerned about making a change then continue reading or I would say ‘meet you in the next blog’.

Since you have continued on… Kudos! Let’s make a change together.

Climate change is the effect of our actions. We do somethings either out of unawareness or insensitivity that affects our entire sapiens species.

A common mistake we commit which adds to climate change

It is our nature to commit mistakes. I agree the hippie statements like, ‘You only live once’, ‘Born to Live’ and so many others but ‘live and let live’ is the new mantra. There are small mistakes which we commit that are going to affect this world. In a very big manner and that too in the very near future. This is similar to butterfly effect.

Today, let us self examine ourselves and those few mistakes we commit which causes climate change. As a bonus credits, there are a few ways of avoiding these mistakes.

Recycle and Reuse only if you can’t Reduce

So, here is what relating to plastic production and climate change.

To produce 1 ton of plastic 5000 kWh (units) of electricity is needed, which means that nearly 1 ton of coal is burned and 2.68 tonnes of CO2 is produced. Now, that is a lot of pollution!

All of these days, we were fooling ourselves in the name of recycling. Only 13% of plastic produced globally is recycled and therefore the rest……?

If you are worried about this small mistake again, then let’s take an infant step. We all commit this mistake since we learnt to walk. There is one simple way to get way form this problem. Reduce!

Reducing 1 ton plastic is equal to planing 2 trees!.

Switch that off

Stand by load is also called as phantom load or ghost load. Analysis say very year 10% of total electricity demand is wasted on stand by power, especially by household appliances. Even the power consumption has a lot of variation. One simple example can be cooling appliances.

The unplugged devices will act like phantom load or ghost load. The electronics in the system will be live because they are waiting for a response from the surrounding. Simply, it will recursively search/wait for some input. Standby consumption of few common household appliances are:

  • 32 Inch LED TV consumes 1 W per hour
  • Home Phone consumes 2 W per hour
  • Home Sound System consumes 1 W per hour
  • Microwave consumes 3 W per hour
  • Washing Machine consumes 1 W per hour

Hence, switch off your electronic appliance whenever not in use and save more energy.

Replace that

  • 1.5 ton AC power consumption = 1676 W/H
  • 1 regular ACIM ceiling fan = 75 W
  • 1 BLDC ceiling fan = 35 W

Therefore, for a day, i.e 24 Hours

  • 1.5 ton AC = 40224 W/H = 40.2 KWH
  • Regular fan = 1.8 KWH
  • BLDC ceiling fan = 0.8KWH

I like to extend the answer further with environmental impacts

If an AC, regular fan and BLDC fan run continuously for a day i.e 24 hours, (excluding the generation and transmission losses) then,

  • 1.5 ton AC burns 5 kg of coal and 7 kg of CO2 is emitted
  • 1 regular fan burns 0.2 kg of coal and 0.3 kg of CO2 is emitted
  • 1 BLDC fan burns 0.09kg of coal and 0.1 kg of CO2 is emitted.

Save the planet

  1. Switching off the lights and fans when you leave a room
  2. Avoiding stand by of any electronic gadget
  3. Charging your gadget just the right and avoiding overcharging.
  4. Taking walks to reach a place of small distance
  5. Avoiding fireworks and crackers
  6. Planting more trees which absorb more carbon like Teak, Neem and Banyan.
  7. avoiding plastics
  8. using energy-efficient appliances like LED, BLDC fans and star rated appliances.
  9. building green homes with minimum use of cement, water and sand, high ceilings and atrium for natural lightnings and ventilation.
  10. Educate others at home and neighborhood about the importance of environmental crisis
  11. Plant more native species of plants since native species of birds, insects and worms feed on native plants
  12. Learn more about your ecosystem and create a natural ecosystem for the animals, plants and birds
